If you’re looking for a bargain on an e-reader, you’d be forgiven for going straight to Kindle listings on Amazon. Just the word, Kindle, has become shorthand for leading e-reader tech — so much so that it’s easy to forget that there are alternatives available.
When we compiled a list of our nine favorite e-readers, only four of them were Kindles. And one of our non-Kindle favorites, the XTEINK, is currently discounted. As of Aug. 25, the XTEINK X3 is marked down to $63.19, a 20% saving off the regular list price of $79.
Now’s certainly a good time to look for Kindle alternatives. Amazon has quietly bumped up prices of its own devices across the board, including Fire Sticks, Echo speakers, and — yes — every type of Kindle. The price hikes are apparently related to what’s been dubbed RAMageddon, an AI-driven tech inflation. Some Kindles have increased by up to $50.
The good news is that we recommend the XTEINK X3 as a slick, pocket-sized alternative. Indeed, it’s especially portable thanks to a 3.7-inch display and a weight of just 58 grams. It will even slip into your wallet. The big selling point is its built-in MagSafe-compatible magnet that attaches to MagSafe devices. In other words, it attaches to the back of your phone.
It comes equipped page turning buttons, though you can also shake it to turn to the next page. It also has a relatively low resolution of 259 ppi — and due to its size, it’s probably best to look elsewhere if you need big, chunky text — and 16MB of memory. The battery, meanwhile, should give you up to 10 hours of reading time.
