Donald Trump grabbed as many press opportunities as he could to criticise Jimmy Kimmel in the run-up to hosting the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, calling the late night show host and longtime critic of the president "terrible" and saying, "If I can't beat out Jimmy Kimmel in terms of talent, then I don't think I should be president."
Fellow late show host Stephen Colbert's response? "You can't and you shouldn't."
In The Late Show clip above, Colbert explains his confusion over Trump talking so much about Kimmel, given that Kimmel hasn't actually hosted the event.
"I called him and Jimmy Kimmel has never hosted the Kennedy Center Honors," says Colbert. "But here's the thing: I did, the three years leading up to Trump becoming president."
Meanwhile, here's what Kimmel himself said in response to Trump.
