Being constantly 'plugged-in' (without
the plugs) has also had an impact on our
behavior. As of 2013, the average American's
attention span is 8 seconds (Statistic Brain).
The average goldfish's attention span? 9
seconds! And it's no wonder: When you're
always just a second away from amazing
entertainment, you're constantly on the hunt
for the next best thing. According to Nielsen,
Americans spend an average of 42 hours
per week engaging with content across their
various screens. That's 6 hours every day!
If everyone's always looking at their screens
then surely it must be easy to get their
attention, right? WRONG! If anything, it's more
difficult now than ever to engage audiences.
The online world is always changing, which
makes it difficult for brands that normally
spend a lot of time developing campaigns to
participate in real-time conversations. Think
about it: If you asked your friend what she
thought of your outfit, would you wait 5 days
for her to consult with her other friends and
do some research before giving you her
answer?
